Understand what you are seeing

Identify the insect first.

“Carpet bugs” is a broad description. Carpet beetles are one possibility, but an insect near a carpet is not enough to identify the cause. Take a clear photograph and ask a pest professional if you are unsure.

University of California IPM guidance explains that carpet-beetle larvae can damage susceptible materials such as wool and other animal-based fibres. Look for larvae, shed skins or localised damage, particularly in less disturbed areas.

A practical first response

Inspect, clean and seek advice.

Inspect carpet edges, beneath furniture and nearby stored textiles. Thorough vacuuming removes accumulated lint, hair and debris; attend to edges and hidden areas as well as open floor. Clean affected washable items according to their care labels.

If activity persists or the affected area is unclear, arrange professional identification and a management plan. Avoid applying unapproved treatments to carpet, and follow product labels and local professional guidance.

Before replacing the floor

Resolve the cause, then assess the damage.

Replacing a carpet should follow an understanding of the problem. Keep photographs and the carpet’s product details so you can discuss the affected material with the appropriate specialist.
