The Benefits of Herringbone Flooring

Pattern, proportion and direction: discover what herringbone brings to an interior and what to consider before fitting.

Discuss your project

A pattern with presence

Give the room a sense of direction.

Herringbone creates a repeating arrangement of rectangular pieces. Its changing grain or surface direction catches the light and gives the floor visual movement. In a hallway it can lead the eye; in a larger room it can become part of the architecture.

The effect depends on the size of the pieces, their tone and the room’s proportions. A pale, restrained palette feels different from a darker floor with a pronounced grain.

Make it personal

Consider the edge as well as the centre.

The main pattern is only part of the design. Borders, thresholds and the way the layout meets doorways influence the finished room. Our walnut-and-gold-inlay photograph shows how a fine accent can define the perimeter.

A border is a design choice, not a requirement for every project. Discuss it alongside your staircase, joinery and adjoining floors so each detail has a reason to be there.

Plan for the pattern

Material and layout work together.

Herringbone is a pattern rather than a single flooring material. Ask which suitable products are available and compare their specifications. The selected system determines preparation and fitting requirements.

Patterned installation also needs a considered setting-out plan and allowance for cutting. Arrange measuring and a quotation and explore our herringbone collection before deciding. Our gallery provides further design inspiration.

Is herringbone worth it?

Weigh the pattern against the extra work.

Herringbone is worth considering if the floor is an important part of your room’s design. Its repeated angles give an entrance or open living space a distinct character, and a border can connect the pattern to the architecture.

The trade-off is a more involved layout: setting out, cutting and any border work can add labour and material requirements compared with a straightforward plank arrangement. Ask for both options to be quoted on the same product and preparation scope. The pattern itself does not guarantee a more durable floor.
