How to Dry a Carpet: Care After Cleaning or a Spill
Start with the cause of the moisture, follow the carpet’s care instructions and avoid treating every wet carpet in the same way.

A spill is different from a soaked floor.
A small clean-water spill, routine carpet cleaning and a leak call for different responses. If water is still entering the room, address the source first. A saturated carpet can also conceal wet underlay or subfloor material.
For extensive water damage, contaminated water, persistent odour or suspected mould, seek professional assessment promptly. Do not assume that a surface which feels dry means the layers beneath it are dry too.
Care for the fibres
Remove moisture gently.
For a small spill, follow the carpet manufacturer’s instructions. Blot with a clean, absorbent white cloth rather than rubbing the pile. Avoid adding water or applying an unapproved cleaning product in an attempt to speed up the process.
After professional cleaning, follow the cleaner’s drying advice. Safe ventilation and appropriate airflow can help; drying time depends on the room, the carpet and how much moisture is present. Keep unnecessary traffic off the area until it is ready for use.
Avoid shortcuts
Protect the finish you chose.
Do not use concentrated heat, a hairdryer or an ordinary vacuum to remove standing water. Do not return furniture to damp carpet without advice, as transfer marks or trapped moisture may result.
