Can Carpet Be Restretched Without Moving Furniture?

Do not assume that carpet can be properly restretched around heavy furniture. The Carpet and Rug Institute’s restretching guidance calls for furniture to be removed from each room so the installer can work across the carpet and reach the edges.

Ask the installer to assess the room before agreeing the work. Built-in joinery, connected areas, seams and the condition of the carpet can affect what is possible. Confirm who will move freestanding furniture and where it can be stored.

Wrinkles and buckles do not automatically mean that the carpet needs replacing, but they need professional assessment. The installer should consider the carpet, backing, underlay, fixing and site conditions before recommending restretching.

Proper equipment and technique matter. The Institute’s guidance distinguishes power stretching from simply using a knee kicker. Avoid a quick cosmetic adjustment without understanding whether it addresses the cause.
